We’re shooting it straight here, and the answer to the question is: Nope. Hope McCrea, played by actress Annette O’Toole, is very much alive and is making her full return on the fourth season of Virgin River.
This has been one of the biggest mysteries that fans had to wait out until the Season 4 premiere of the Netflix Original last July 20. Because not only did Hope get into a tragic car accident and sustained a traumatic brain injury, but her character has also been away for the majority of Season 3. That is, Hope left town to help take care of her aunt on the other side of the coast in South Carolina and was only seen in a few FaceTime cameos.

But her absence was mainly just a pandemic precaution. Annette couldn’t be physically there to film, so showrunner Tenney and the writers had to write her out of the season. Nevertheless, she’s back, and things are intense with Season 4. She will be recovering from the injury, navigating through the emotional distress, and still diving into the ongoing drama like who shot Jack?
And another happy update for fans: Season 5 is in the works now and will most likely premiere sometime during the summer of 2023. So stay tuned!
