Nurse/midwife Melinda Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) left the big city of Los Angeles and arrived in the small, tight-knit town of Virgin River, looking to start afresh. But as she grew closer with the local bar owner Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), rumors started milling and speculations about her past growing – especially since she still wore a ring around her finger.
So what happened?
In a series of flashbacks, viewers got to know Mel’s husband, Mark Monroe, a sailor/doctor played by actor Daniel Gillies and their tragic story.
Mark and Mel were happily expecting their first child, but unfortunately, the pregnancy ended in a stillbirth. Mel then fell into depression. The couple still tried to get pregnant, and they underwent multiple treatments. None made it through, Mel wasn’t getting any better, and the toll was heavily weighing in on their marriage. Then they get into a vicious argument in the car while Mark is driving. Mel wanted to pursue another round of IVF, but Mark was ready to stop and just focus on their relationship. In the middle of the fight, he took his eyes off the road and got into a horrific car accident. He died at the hospital.
