Speaking Her Truth: Dove Cameron Opens Up About Revealing She’s Bisexual

“I was never confused about who I was,” the ex-Disney Star Dove Cameron candidly opened up about being bisexual on her first LGBTQ+ cover, the summer issue of the Gay Times magazine. However, the hesitation and struggle to come out publicly were rooted in her fear that she wouldn’t be accepted and the strange narrative she had inside her head that people wouldn’t believe her.

The singer said that she had been hinting about her sexuality for years through her music. That said, she had never been comfortable spelling it out explicitly. The biggest drop, and the one that ultimately led her to reveal her sexuality, was her 2020 song “We Belong.”

In the lyric video, there were line drawings of couples kissing, and it was noticeable that not all of them were heterosexual. Everyone got the idea that it was a very proud LGBTQ+ anthem, and she was accused of queerbaiting.

So, she went live on Instagram to personally clarify the situation. She said, “Guys, I really needed to explain something to you. Maybe I haven’t said it, but I’m super queer.” She also added that this was something she wanted to represent through her music because it is who she is.

Before coming out as queer (bisexual), Dove Cameron was in a four-year relationship with her fellow “Descendants 2” star Thomas Doherty. The couple broke up in October 2020. Following that was a very difficult time for her in terms of focusing on where she was and stepping back into her power.

Seeing how her celebrity role models like Ben Platt, Kristen Stewart, and Cara Delevingne embrace their authentic selves, she asked herself if she could do the same. She couldn’t talk about it before, but she felt that there had been a lot of changes in the industry wherein people like her were given spaces to be human and not to be picked apart.

Most importantly, her decision to do so was her hope to inspire her own fans who are going through the same thing.

She was definitely very nervous about coming out. However, she realized that behaving like everyone knew she was queer when they didn’t was part of the problem. Simply put, she had to let people know.

And it was probably the best thing she did for herself and her fans. Ever since Cameron spoke her truth, she forged stronger relationships with her fans.

She created a very safe space for everyone to be true to themselves. As for labels, the singer didn’t think much about them because, for her, the whole process of coming out was about her as a whole rather than who she chose to date or sleep with.

“I’m choosing to love myself, to be who I am every day and not edit myself depending on the room that I’m in. I’m making no apologies for who I am,” Cameron said.
