Google Doodle Honors Dr. Ildaura Murillo Rohde for Her Outstanding Contributions to Healthcare

Last 2021, in celebration of the U.S. Hispanic Heritage Month, Google Doodle honored Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde. She is a trailblazing Hispanic nurse who established the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) and is widely considered the first Latina nurse in history.

The lovely google-doodle, created by guest artist Loris Lora, shows Dr. Ildaura Murillo Rohde working in a diversified hospital environment like many nurses do while holding onto a notepad.

She worked hard throughout her career to support underrepresented groups. She was also a leading factor in creating equitable opportunities for Hispanics wanting to find a career in the health field.

Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde, born in Panama on September 6, 1920. She began her nursing career in San Antonio, Texas, where she had the opportunity to network with other Hispanic nurses in the area. Her outstanding career in health care was inevitable, given that she came from a family of doctors.

She actively participated in the American Nurse Association throughout her nursing career. As a member of that group, she found it odd that healthcare institutions employed few Latina nurses in areas with a high Latino population.

Hence, to give Hispanic nurses in the United States equitable access to training and professional opportunities, she was motivated to form the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) in 1975. NAHN aims to enhance healthcare outcomes and delivery in the United States so that members may better themselves and the community.

Dr. Ildaura Murillo Rohde’s achievements influenced not only the Hispanic community but the nursing profession as a whole. She advocates cultural competency in nursing and healthcare, which inspired other cultural races to create their own.

Even now, Dr. Ildaura Murillo Rohde’s efforts and legacy endure as NAHN continues to encourage opportunities for Latina nurses, despite her death in 2010. Her accomplishments, which included giving out scholarships for aspiring nurses and honors received, are cherished by her organization members.

That said, it’s clear that Google honored the Hispanic nurse with a doodle in recognition of her undoubtedly sincere enthusiasm for nursing and genuine care for her fellow Latina nurses.

Google honoring Dr. Ildaura Murillo Rohde for her achievements in the field of healthcare is a step in the right direction. After all, acknowledging the accomplishments of diverse individuals working in the healthcare field is an act that has long been overdue.
