In an interview with The Advocate in 2016, years after their split, actress Renée Zellweger candidly opened up about how she felt about rumors, asking, “Is Kenny Chesney gay?” The speculations came after she cited “fraud” that caused their rather short-lived marriage – a total of four months, to be precise.
According to the actress, she felt upset by the rumors. It made her sad that people somehow twisted it and used it as an excuse to be cruel and call someone gay as a pejorative. It wasn’t simple name-calling because it had fateful consequences. She also addressed what she described as a bigger-picture problem, which was why anyone would have to make up a story like that at all.

She didn’t give any more comments when asked about what had happened between them. She simply noted that she had already said what she had and needed to say.
That is because after filing her annulment, she issued a statement clarifying that “fraud” was simply legal language and didn’t reflect her ex’s character. The exes also published a joint statement at the time, explaining that they separated due to miscommunication on the purpose of their marriage.

Zellweger continued that she was an old-fashioned gal who felt it inappropriate to hang one’s laundry on the lawn. Moreover, it was devaluing as a human being when people shared very personal things with strangers. She just didn’t see that there was any dignity in that. But she also acknowledged that sometimes, it was difficult to let something like that go – especially with the unnecessary ugliness often perpetuated in media that people always get attracted to.
“Once you’ve said your piece, shouldn’t that be enough?”
Chesney has also since set the record straight during his interview with Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes in February 2007. He said that it was not true – period.
However, he said that maybe he should’ve come out earlier to say that he wasn’t gay. Then again, he didn’t want to draw any more attention to the issue. More importantly, he didn’t have to prove to anyone that he wasn’t gay.
So, once again, “Is Kenny Chesney gay?” The answer is no. Case closed.
