Yellowstone Honors Melanie Olmstead In S02 Finale

At the end of the Season 2 finale ‘Sins of the Father,’ the Paramount hit series Yellowstone honored a valuable member of their production crew, Melanie Olmstead. According to Express, Olmstead served as part of the filming crew and as a transporter for the series’ production team. And her work undeniably helped Yellowstone achieve the overwhelming amount of success that it now enjoys.

Let’s get to know her and her work more.

Who is Melanie Olmstead?

Melanie Olmstead was born on November 15, 1968, and was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah by her adoptive parents, Reid Howard and Janet Corbridge. According to reports, Corbridge died in 1979, and Olmstead was left in the care of her adoptive father and his second wife, Loa Rose Hanson.

Growing up, Olmstead easily felt comfortable around her horses. According to her Facebook post in 2018, her love affair with horses started about the time she learned to walk. But it wasn’t until she was an adult that she got her first very own horse. Mahogany, who was featured in the post, had been with her since she was in college, and she considered her as her oldest friend.

Aside from being a horse lover, Olmstead was also an activist. She actively supported stricter gun control, socioeconomic equality, observation of human rights as well as climate change reforms, and preservation of her town’s natural environment. She also spent time advocating and working on women’s education initiatives in Africa.

How did she end up in Yellowstone?

In 2000, Melanie Olmstead started her career in the film and TV industry. As per her IMDB profile, her first stint was as a location assistant in the 2000 American action-thriller-mystery film “Primary Suspect.” Then she started specializing in transportation and establishing her name. Olmstead had 11 film credits, and she was known for four (4), including “Frozen” (2010), “John Carter” (2012), “Point Break” (2015), and “Hereditary” (2018).

She also had two television show credits, Andi Mack and Snatchers in 2017, before joining Yellowstone in 2018. Her ranch experience and conservation efforts proved to be very valuable in creating the authenticity in the show. Additionally, her extensive knowledge of her home state also definitely helped. That is, 80 percent of the first three seasons of the show were filmed in Utah. In a report published by Utah Business, this production decision was ‘due at least in part to the tax rebates offered by the state to large productions.

What happened to Melanie Olmstead?

As Season 2 concluded, viewers were greeted with a title card “In memory of Melanie Olmstead 1968-2019” appeared. Tributes are not uncommon in the series, but this one made fans curious as Taylor Sheridan also featured a same-name character in the show, a woman who had gone missing after her boyfriend Jamie Munson was killed. It was only a brief appearance, and her story-line didn’t continue afterward.

As it turned out, it was Taylor Sheridan’s way of honoring the behind-the-scenes crew member’s life and work.

The real-life Melanie Olmstead passed away at the age of 50 on May 25, 2019, due to reported complications from cancer. Family, friends, and fans wrote messages for Olmstead on social media, reminiscing moments and remembering her as a good friend who treated everyone well.

“I’m so sorry for all the people who were not lucky enough to cross Mel’s path. Rarely have I met a woman who could equal her integrity.”

“My memories of Mel are of a brilliant, funny, and slightly twisted woman of character. I have held her in my heart for over 30 years.”

On July 30, 2019, Olmstead’s family and friends organized a horseback riding event for her. Artists, writers, and many horse-riders from her Salt Lake City community and Yellowstone production team came and joined them to remember her and celebrate her life.

Melanie Olmstead’s passing was a big loss to her Yellowstone family, and she will forever be remembered. Her talent and skill stood as one of the show’s many pillars and gave way for it to be successful.
