A Look Back At Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher’s Almost-Decade-Long Relationship

When Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher’s publicly debuted their relationship at the 2003 movie premiere of Moore’s “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” they immediately snatched every entertainment headline.

For one, they were both high-profile actors. Second, they have a 15-year age gap – Kutcher was 25 while Moore had already hit 40 – which became a major focus of many published articles and inevitably caused everyone to follow them closely. Despite the struggles, they remained strong and pushed through dating.

The couple finally wed in 2005 but ultimately separated after six years. In Moore’s 2019 Tell-All memoir, she bared all the drama inside her marriage with the actor.

The First Chapter: Falling In Love

Moore and Kutcher were first introduced to each other at a casual dinner with friends, and it didn’t take them long to find their spark. In May 2003, the two were spotted on a double date with Kim Porter and Sean “P. Diddy” Combs in Miami, where someone witnessed their ‘very romantic kiss.’ A month later, they publicly appeared together at Moore’s “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” movie premiere.

With their relationship out in the public, they faced a lot of criticism – especially with their age gap. In Moore’s memoir titled “Inside Out,” she wrote that at the time, she was a ’40-year-old who had a big life’ while Kutcher was just starting the adult chapter of his life.

However, she confessed that she didn’t see all of that because she was inside of it. She said, “I just felt like a 15-year-old girl hoping somebody liked me.”

Moore also shared more about how her relationship with Kutcher bloomed with ABC’s Diane Sawyer. She said that she had been responsible for so much of her life, and suddenly, a window opened where she felt safe.

The actress also added that at the time, she had the money, and Kutcher loved her children and wasn’t intimidated by her ex-husband Bruce Willis. She felt like she had zero baggage with trunks.

In time, they were able to take the age gap issue in stride. When Kutcher hosted SNL in 2005, the actress made a cameo wearing old-age makeup and using a walker to appear older than she was. Then on September 24 that year, they tied the knot at their home in Beverly Hills.

A friend in attendance said the wedding was so beautiful and ‘incredibly unpretentious.’ Another friend also noted how there was so much love in the air.

According to Moore, while she wasn’t speaking on behalf of Kutcher, she felt that he had adjusted well from a bachelor living with a roommate to a married man living in a house full of women. She also added that her husband had a wonderful relationship with his own mom, which probably made the transition even easier.

“It also says a lot about the confidence that he holds within himself as an individual,” the actress shared. Kutcher also said that he and Moore’s daughters talk about everything.

Co-parenting with Willis was a breeze, too. Moore and Willis ensured that they kept positive relationships with one another and with each of their respective partners. Willis and Kutcher had mutual respect for each other and also ensured that the kids were always prioritized.

The Second Chapter: Falling Into Destruction

Sadly, their fairy tale slowly fell into destruction. Moore shared in her memoir that initially, she had ‘never been so happy’ before Kutcher. They immediately started in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and other treatments and even explored adoption.

Then, after they had a miscarriage a year and a half into their relationship, Moore struggled. She opened up with Sawyer that losing their baby six months into the pregnancy left her ‘lost, empty, desperate, confused’ to the point that she lost sight of everything she had, including her family.

On the Red Table Talk back in 2019, Moore’s daughters Rumer and Tallulah said that when their mom wanted to have a baby, and it wasn’t happening, it became her sole focus. It came to a point where they thought they weren’t enough.

The actress also admitted that it caused a strain in her marriage with Kutcher. She said, “And I think the weight that it put on Ashton — you know, it’s kind of a natural thing to pull back when somebody’s, you know, clinging too tight.”

That wasn’t just it, though. After 20 years of sobriety, Moore fell back into the dark pit. She was also popping 12 Vicodin pills a day.

She claimed that, in her mind, it was Kutcher who nudged her to drink again. Recalling that moment, Moore wrote in her memoir that her husband was enjoying a glass of red wine then when he told her that he didn’t know if alcoholism was a real thing. Saying that, he thought it was all about moderation.

Moore definitely wanted to be that girl – the one who has her own glass at dinner or takes a tequila shot at a party. She even thought it was what Kutcher wanted too, but it ultimately cost her guilt.

According to the actress, she blamed herself for opening the door to drinking. If she hadn’t, she wouldn’t have lost the baby. Even worse, she was still smoking when she found out she was carrying their child, and it even took weeks for her to quit completely.

The Third Chapter: The Final Straw

During the last years of their marriage, the couple got hit with many tabloid rumors, including Kutcher cheating on her. That said, they remained strong – at least that was what they showed – and Kutcher even visited his wife on the set of The Reasonable Bunch. A source confided with PEOPLE then that Moore had been gushing over Kutcher, and they could hear them laughing in her trailer.

However, behind closed doors was brewing hot drama in the bedroom. Kutcher expressed his desire to do a threesome, and since Moore put him first, she didn’t say no to his fantasy. She also wanted him to see how great and fun she could be.

They did end up doing that with two different people. Though there were no bad intentions, she realized that opening up their relationship to other people was a big mistake.

It was even the reason why she put the finger on herself when Kutcher cheated on her during Danny Masterson’s bachelor party in San Diego (which she received the news via Google alert). She said that allowing another person into their relationship blurred the lines and justified what he had done to an extent. Also, it didn’t just happen once but twice.

In 2015, Scott Eastwood seemingly confirmed Kutcher’s infidelity on Watch What Happens Live. He said that his girlfriend cheated on him with the actor and added that it was the ‘catalyst’ that broke the couple up.

The Last Chapter: It’s Over

Six years after vowing to love each other till death do they part, the couple’s relationship unraveled. A day before their sixth anniversary, Moore shared a quote on Twitter that said, “When we are offended at any man’s fault, turn to yourself & study your own failings. Then you will forget your anger.”

They also didn’t spend the day together. Moore flew to New York to promote her short film, while Kutcher traveled to San Diego for the weekend.

Then finally, on November 17, they released separate statements announcing their separation. Moore shared with fans her sadness and heavy heart, writing that as a woman, a mother, and a wife, there were things that she held sacred. So, in that spirit, she had chosen to move forward with her life.

On the other hand, Kutcher expressed his appreciation toward Moore, saying that he would forever cherish their time together. He also added that marriage was one of the most difficult things in the world, and some inevitably fail.

However, it wasn’t until a year later that they legally filed for divorce. Moore sought spousal support and attorney fees from her ex-husband, who had reportedly earned $24 million a year before with “Two and a Half Men.”

So How Are They Post Break-up?

The two definitely had it rough after the breakup.

To Moore, it wasn’t just about the relationship but her whole life. Its end certainly took a toll on her and even devastated her to a certain degree.

Then there was Kutcher, who shared with Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast in 2018 that he went to the mountains alone for a week with just water, tea, a notepad, and a pen. During the trip, he said that he wrote to everyone he had a relationship with and let out all the grudge and regret. Then on his seventh day, he typed everything out and sent them.

Ashton Kutcher has been married to actress Mila Kunis since 2015. Demi Moore dated Eleven Madison Park chef Daniel Humm in 2022, though they, unfortunately, split after less than a year of dating. As for the ex’s relationship, they don’t hang out anymore, but all is good between them.
