Now that Yellowstone is back for another season, Tate might again battle it with death – Yes, he is still alive. In the previous seasons of the series, he survived two life-threatening ordeals. And in both times, fans were convinced that Tate wouldn’t make it out alive. Let’s take a recap of these moments.
S02E09: Enemies by Monday
The last few sequences of this episode took on quite a gripping turn that took fans spinning at the edge of their seats. Not to mention the whole drama and action that has been brewing over the past episodes.
Tate (Brecken Merrill) and his grandfather John (Kevin Costner) had been spending some time together. Tate went for dessert during dinner, but John stopped him and asked if he had already fed his horse – an attempt to teach his young heir responsibility as early as possible. Tate forgot, so he went outside to bring his horse a bale of hay. When he didn’t return immediately, John quickly searched for him, but he was nowhere to be seen.

It didn’t take long for the Duttons to finally piece things together: Tate was kidnapped, and the Becks were behind it. But the season ended right after here, so fans had to wait for the next to know if Tate survived.
The show picked up right on the pilot of Season 3, and as it turned out, Tate was alive. The Duttons found him in the bathroom with his head shaved, his body bruised, and in total shock.
S04E01: Half The Money; Phantom Pain Part 1
As if the kidnapping wasn’t traumatic enough for a young boy, Tate was again put into a life-threatening situation. And this time, he was with his mom Monica (Kelsey Asbille).

In Season 4’s pilot episode, Tate and Monica were inside the Dutton home when a masked man attacked them. When Tate appeared in the frame, he was holding a gun which he fired at the man attempting to murder his mom. They then slipped through numerous attackers that surrounded the home and the ranch. After that, they weren’t shown again until the last few minutes of Episode 3, “All I See Is You,” where his dad Kayce (Luke Grimes) went to bring him dinner. He was hiding under the bed, traumatized after the attack, while his mom was on the bed, visibly upset.
They survived the attack, but it cost them a lot – especially Tate.
Will Tate survive Season 5?
While it wouldn’t be surprising for a character to get killed, his death would probably be if showrunners decide to end his chapter. Tate is the Duttons’ only grandchild (though they will soon welcome a second as Monica is pregnant). And not only is he an essential tie in relationships in the family, but he is also a bridge between the Duttons and the Longs who live in the Brocken Rock Indian Reservation near the ranch.
