Mary J. Blige On Having Children: “I Don’t Think It’s Gonna Happen.”

The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul and R&B, Mary J. Blige, does not have children of her own, and it’s not a life milestone that she plans to achieve.

In an interview with E!’s Daily Pop, the singer-songwriter was asked whether she would regret not having children. To which she responded, “Oh, I’m not there yet, so I’m good.” She then expounded, saying that she already has nieces and nephews and doesn’t want to go through the process of scrambling for babysitters.

She also candidly shared another reason why she stays childless: Freedom.

According to Blige, she liked her freedom – being able to get up, move, and do anything that she wanted to do. Additionally, she didn’t want to have to take care of someone all the time. That was why having her own flesh and blood wasn’t something that would happen.

That said, she did experience motherhood, being a stepmom to three kids named Briana, Jordan, and Nas. The siblings were her ex-husband Kendu Isaac’s (to whom she was married from 2008 until 2018) children in a previous relationship.

In 2007, during an interview with Redbook, she opened up about how much she loved her stepchildren. She also shared how they’d been asking her about what they should call her, and she would answer that they could call her whatever they wanted.

She adds that they could even call her by her name, Mary. She also emphasized that they didn’t have to call her “Mommy” until they were ready.

Nevertheless, it didn’t change her mind about having her own. In an interview with PEOPLE in 2009, she also honestly revealed that she had no plans of fostering or adopting. She said that she barely had time for her three stepchildren, so adopting more and not having time for them would be poor parenting on her part.

It looks like Mary J. Blige still isn’t regretting her decision and is enjoying her life without children. In fact, she’s featuring on Diddy’s 2023 album, The Love Album: Off The Gridalong with The Weeknd, Justin Bieber, Jazmine Sullivan, H.E.R, Summer Walker, Babyface, John Legend, Teyana Taylor, and more.
