Reminisce the Boatmance: ‘Below Deck’ Alum Malia White and Jake Baker

Earlier this year, Below Deck Med alum Bosun Malia White confirmed in her chat with Showbiz CheatSheet that her boatmance with engineer Jake Baker has finally run its course. Though her relationship status as ‘officially single’ didn’t surprise fans, considering she already wiped out any trace of Jake – and he did so, too – on her Instagram.

Before we let go of them, let’s take one final look at their relationship.

Single On Board

When Malia White went on board and returned to the hit Bravo series Below Deck Mediterranean for the third time, she had just concluded her one-year relationship with fellow yachtie Chef Tom Checketts. She was still a mess coming into the season and ‘didn’t really want to even see men’ then.

However, she didn’t fully discount that a relationship with a colleague on board could blossom again. After all, they see and interact with each other for months at a time.

Love did find her once again. She met Jake Baker aboard Lady Michelle when the show filmed its sixth season in Croatia. Baker appeared on the season premiere during a crew introduction but was offscreen for the rest of the episodes.

Officially Dating

The two started dating after filming wrapped. In July 2021, Baker posted a sweet birthday tribute for White, calling her the ‘Moon Bot Queen’ and ending it with an “ILY.”

A month later, they made their relationship Instagram official with a PDA-packed photo of them kissing by the pool, which the hot engineer captioned with a simple black heart. Stew Courtney Veale even commented on the post, saying that the two ‘just broke the internet.’

The couple had kept their romance very lowkey since White had just been through a very public breakup with Checketts. Though they still shared photos from time to time for fans.

White and Baker also spent some time together on the same boat for six months, and of course, the Bosun definitely loved having him on her vessel. It simply shows that it is more challenging to maintain a relationship in the yachting industry when you’re on different boats and time zones.

Unfortunately, after two years of dating, the couple called it quits. First was the Instagram wipeout. We all know the drill. That’s always the first step in a breakup. Then came the confirmation through an Instagram story wherein a fan asked White if she and Baker were still together, to which she answered “No.”

The Bosun didn’t comment further about their split as they had always been ultra-private about their relationship. But she did share her thoughts on dating a yachtie, as she had already done twice. White said, “Skips the whole, like, chivalry side of things where you get to set a standard because you already live together.”

There is also the issue of setting boundaries which is difficult considering you live in cabins just next to each other. To add even more things in White’s case, she jumped from one committed relationship to another without taking a break for herself.

Nevertheless, Malia White isn’t closing off her doors to dating yachties like Jake Baker. But she is definitely going to choose more wisely next time. You can stream Below Deck Mediterranean on NBC and Peacock.
