Chris Stapleton and Morgane Stapleton: The Relationship That Blossomed From One Songwriting Session

Country singer Chris Stapleton and his fellow musician and now-wife Morgane Stapleton’s romance, which started on one songwriting-session-turned-first-date in 2003, has slowly blossomed into the most swoon-worthy kind of relationship. And no one will probably argue with us when we say: We all want a love like theirs.

So, let’s ride the time machine back to the early 2000s and see how their love story unfolded.

Chapter 1: Budding Love

Music is definitely a love language, seeing how Chris and Morgane fell in love with each other after one songwriting session.

As the story goes, the two first met as songwriters for different publishers. Morgane was already a fan of his talent then. Speaking with The Washington Post, she shared how they would hear the jingle of the country singer’s keys as he walked down the hall, and they all knew that he was going to play them whatever new song he had written.

Then, he eventually asked her to write a song with him. The songwriting session ended up being their first date; needless to say, there wasn’t much writing done that night.

However, years later, Morgane confessed that since their companies collaborated a lot, she would hang around after meetings or events in hopes of catching his eye.

The couple has been private with the details of their dating phase, but Morgane shared a bit with The New York Times in 2017 before their romance started. She recalled asking his now husband’s team then for all the volumes of his songs and the CDs of everything he had written up until that point.

She said, “I was singing with Chris long before he knew I was singing with him.”

Chris and Morgane said their ‘I dos’ on October 27, 2007. Little did Chris know, Morgane had his wedding band secretly engraved with the words “You Are My Sunshine” in honor of the song by the same name. In 2016, they duetted the song as part of the ‘Southern Family’ album produced by Dave Cobb and participated by other country music artists.

As a married couple and way before they were even one, Morgane has always been very supportive of Chris’ career. Fans often found her on stage with him, either playing tambourine or joining backup vocals.

In fact, all of the female vocals that you’d hear on Chris’ albums were all from her. Many might now know it because she’s pretty much on the lowkey. Additionally, Morgane has also built a career for herself as a songwriter. She even has her own collection of big features and credits.

Chapter 3: Blossoming

In 2009, they welcomed their first son, Wayland. And then, in two years, they turned into a family of four with the arrival of their beautiful baby girl, Ada. It wasn’t just their family that slowly blossomed; Chris’ country music career also started gaining momentum.

Of course, he hit a slump first, just like any success story. In 2013, Chris released his first major label single, “What Are You Listening To?” Unfortunately, it barely made any dent in the charts. With the death of the singer’s father later that year, he felt that he needed a break.

To help inspire him, Morgane gifted him a 1979 Jeep Cherokee and encouraged him to make a country road trip. So, he flew with his wife and photographer, Becky Fluke, to pick it up.

While the Cherokee didn’t make it all the way with multiple mechanical problems, including a dead battery and a faulty alternator, it got Chris his title track for his debut album, “Traveller.” He wrote the song while driving as the sun rose in the desert in New Mexico.

He wrote the rest of the album after the ‘failed’ trip, and it won three major awards at the Country Music Association Awards (CMAs) with the album. He still owns his lucky Cherokee.

Oh, and a fun fact, the singer joked that his wife had great taste in everything but men. “The vast majority of the songs on my debut album, Traveller, came from lists she made.”

Chapter 4: In Full Bloom

Chris Stapleton started to earn more recognition in the industry after he released his debut album. Their relationship strengthened as they rolled through life, music, and tours.

In 2016, they launched a charitable fund called Outlaw State of Kind to support various causes close to their heart. The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee distributed this. Two years later, they welcomed their twins, Macon and Samuel. A year after, Morgane gave birth to their fifth child.

Part of the equation that made them stronger was holding each other accountable. In an interview with The New York Times, Chris shared, “We can lift each other up on bad nights, kind of give each other a wink when we screw up or do something funny.”

If you want to see a healthy relationship, look no further than Chris Stapleton and Morgane Stapleton. They never get tired of inspiring and encouraging each other. They build each other up and make sure they both know they are appreciated by the other. Lastly, they are always honest with each other.
