The Legendary Kevin Costner Is A Dad To 7 Children – Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Them

We all know that Kevin Costner is a legendary actor, but what most probably don’t know about the guy is that he is also a proud dad of seven children.

Yes, you didn’t read that wrong. Costner has a huge family.

He married his first wife, Cindy Silva, in 1978, and they had three kids together: Annie, Lily, and Joe. After sixteen years of marriage, they announced their divorce with a statement saying they had amicably resolved all of their affairs and reached a full marital settlement. (According to E! News, it cost Costner a lot as he had to pay Silva $80 million for their separation.)

Shortly after his divorce from Silva, Costner had a brief affair with heiress Bridget Rooney. They had a boy, Liam, whom the actor only allegedly acknowledged after an insisted paternity test by Rooney. A source told PEOPLE that Costner didn’t really have a tangible relationship with his son as he only saw the kid occasionally. However, he did set up a trust fund in his name.

After Rooney, it took some time before Costner committed himself to another relationship. When he did, it almost didn’t work out.

He and handbag designer Christine Baumgartner dated for two years, then broke up in 2002 because the actor didn’t want more children. They reconciled, got engaged in 2003, and wed a year later in Aspen. Then they welcomed two sons – Cayden Wyatt and Hayes Logan – and a daughter, Grace Avery.

Unfortunately, their relationship has run its course. In May 2023, Baumgartner filed for divorce with “irreconcilable differences” as the reason.

“All of my kids are showered with love.”

According to Costner, being a father is one of his life’s greatest joys. He says that all of his seven children are showered with love, and he doesn’t pick any favorites.

So, who are they? Let’s meet them one by one, shall we?

Annie Costner

Annie was born on April 15, 1984, and she is the eldest of Costner’s three children with his first wife, Cindy Silva. She attended Brown University for college and was a member of the 2006 graduating class.

As a young girl, Annie had already gained interest in her father’s craft. Lucky for her, her dad was a Hollywood hotshot, and she got to experience what it was like to be an actress on set.

She appeared in three of Costner’s films – the Oscar-winning “Dances With Wolves” (1990) as Christine, “Waterworld” (1995) as the credited Atoll Girl, and “The Postman” (1997) as herself, Annie Costner.

She also had credits in “The Baby-Sitters Club” and “Lazy Teenage Superheroes.”

Eventually, she found her calling. In 2014, she co-founded Sound Off Films, a boutique production company mainly producing documentaries and non-fiction storytelling, with producer Adrienne Hall. Sound Off was actually behind Katy Perry’s “Witness Tour” documentary, “The Pittsburgh Drug Trails,” “The Discarded: A Tale of Two Rios,” “ESPN 30 for 30: Bump and Spike,” and “El Cartel Cubano.”

Then in 2016, she exchanged vows with Dr. Danny Cox on Costner’s private estate in Carpinteria with family and friends as witnesses. They now have two kids, Vincent Leo and Vida Valle.

Lily Costner

Two years after Annie was born, Costner and Silva welcomed their second child and daughter. Lily was born on August 4, 1986, in LA and is a Costner through and through.

One, she has the acting chops just like her dad and sister. She appeared in “The Postman,” “The Baby-Sitters Club,” “3000 Miles to Graceland,” and “Black or White.” Two, she also inherited his father’s talent in singing and songwriting. In fact, the two collaborated on Yellowstone’s soundtrack “Heaven’s Gate,” where his father starred as the patriarch John Dutton.

That wasn’t her only big-time collaboration. In 2003, she joined country superstar Trace Adkins for “Silent Night” on his Christmas album The King’s Gift. They even sang the duet live.

However, it looks like Lily is very lowkey about her social media presence and doesn’t love to do self-promotion. Well, she doesn’t need to worry about that part really, and that’s because her dad is already doing it for her.

In an interview with HuffPost in 2014, Costner called his daughter an amazing singer and songwriter and said she’s really gifted. He even said she could be a huge star if only she wanted to.

As for Lily’s love life, it’s a mystery.

Joe Costner

Joe arrived on January 31, 1988, and is the youngest of Costner and Silva’s children. He graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder.

The young Costner shared the same childhood with his sisters, acting on set. He first appeared on the big screen with his father in 1996 on the “Tin Cup,” then again a year later on “The Postman.” However, this time, he had his older sisters with him.

Sadly, Joe didn’t explore acting further and ventured more on the behind-the-scenes as an audio engineer and production sound mixer. According to his dad, who never failed to brag about his kids’ achievements, Joe (just like Lily) is gifted in music. Apart from that, anyone could judge how well he had done in life by the quality of his friends and how he had kept them through the years.

As of now, Joe is busy with Spartan Recording, a studio on wheels that he had built in a 1951 trailer – from scratch. He outfitted it with analog equipment that definitely gave the classic aesthetic and nostalgic vibe. You can check out his whole setup here

Liam Costner

Liam is Costner’s son with his ex-girlfriend Bridget Rooney. He was born in November 1996, and that’s all anyone knows about him. He doesn’t have any social media presence, and unlike his siblings, he has yet to appear on the screen either by himself or with his father.

Cayden Wyatt Costner

When Cayden was born on May 6, 2007, Costner was already 52. Being a father over 50, he definitely had some concerns, especially if he had the energy for him as much as he did for his first ones. Basically, he feared that his son might be raised by someone else and that he won’t get to be a father to him for long.

Though burdened with mixed emotions, he was happy to have his son, even more so when he saw his young boy’s interest in music. According to the actor, when Cayden was a year old, he had little guitars and loved to spend time listening to the band and sitting on his dad’s knee whenever he made rough tracks.

As he watched Cayden grow older, his fears slowly faded away. At night, his son would ask for his stories – what he did and what adventures he tried. It was their version of a bedtime story.

Now, Cayden is a big boy who has become a gentle soul and a good big brother too.

Hayes Logan Costner

On February 12, 2009, Costner and Baumgartner welcomed their second son, Hayes Logan. Apparently, his name was inspired by a cowboy character in a Western film that the actor was working on at the time.

It was definitely a fitting actor name if he ever decides to follow in his father’s footsteps. In fact, he already had a trial run when he joined him for a small role in “Horizon,” a four-part Western epic.

That said, it wasn’t like Costner was actively trying to get his son to be an actor. It was simply a ploy to get his son on set and hang out with him while he worked.

However, he’s still young, and his interests still change. Early on, he really liked playing sports and was definitely on his way to becoming an athlete.

In an appearance on Today, the actor said that Hayes and his siblings were in the phase of playing the Little League games. Since going to three different practices takes a lot of work, he and his wife got them into the same team.

So, Hayes had to play with 8 and 9 years old when he was just 7. However, he didn’t really seem to mind the age gap because he easily adapted to it.

When he’s not busy playing or memorizing lines, he’s strutting down the red carpet with his siblings and his dad. Back in 2019, the whole family was spotted on the premiere of The Art of Racing in the Rain in LA.

Grace Avery Costner

The youngest of the seven-kid club of Costner is Grace Avery. She arrived on June 2, 2010, and she’s definitely a sweetheart. She’s his dad’s little “girly girl” who loves sewing and dancing.

Although, she does play ball with her brothers when she hears something bouncing in the backyard. According to the actor, the thing with Grace was that everything had to stop when she played.

Despite her very feminine style, she was the blunt one of the pack. When she was young, she signed her Father’s Day card for Costner with “Your best child.”

There was also another time when she blatantly pointed out her dad’s gained weight. As the story went on, she quietly sat down next to Costner while he was watching his film “Black and White” and then blurted out that he got a fat belly (in the pool scene).

She was also very observant and aware that her dad changed his appearance from time to time because of his job. Once, she commented that Costner had been out fighting again when he came home with what he described as “a pretty severe haircut.”

So, there we have all seven of Kevin Costner’s children!
