Pop star Britney Spears brought back the ‘90s in 2019 as she loosely recreated the iconic schoolgirl outfit – white tied top and pleated skirt – that she wore in her 1998 debut single “Baby One More Time” music video. The singer posted the look on her Instagram, and needless to say, we are obsessed.

It’s undeniable that Britney Spears has been an iconic figure in the music industry ever since she stepped on stage. Everything makes it into pop culture history, from her songs to her dance down to the clothing items she wears from head to toe.
One of those that checked all the boxes was “Baby One More Time.” She was 16 when she debuted the song, and it quickly catapulted onto the top of the global pop charts.
People worldwide copied her dance moves, and her music video costume and styling influenced fashion trends. In fact, it’s worn as a Halloween costume even to this day.
If you haven’t watched it yet (and you should because, at this point, it’s a classic), Spears wore a white top tied in front, layered with a gray cardigan, and paired up with a black pleated skirt and gray knee-high socks and shoes. She had her blonde hair split into two pigtail braids secured by pink, fuzzy pompoms.
Two decades later, she posted a mirror selfie wearing the same styled top and skirt. In her Instagram caption, the singer said that she had just gone shade shopping that day.
Spears had her blouse adorned with ruffles tied in the front, mimicking a crop top. Next, she wore a pleated skirt in a black plaid pattern. Then she finished her whole outfit with black Birkenstock-like sandals. As for hair and accessories, she styled her hair in a high ponytail and accessorized with a bracelet.
The bracelet was the only nice thing she found in what she called an “unsuccessful shopping trip.”

That wasn’t the first and only time that Britney Spears recreated her iconic look, though.
In 2017, she posted a mini-fashion show featuring her twirling to Britney’s “Don’t Hurt Yourself” in three separate locations: a photo studio, her terrace, and her hallway. She started with two different-styled dresses, followed by her signature low-rise shorts paired with a white bra and knee-high boots, then concluded with her schoolgirl outfit (though in an emerald green plaid instead of the black in the original) and her hair down.
Fans definitely went into a frenzy after seeing the video.
In August 2021, she posted yet another photo of her wearing her “Baby One More Time” top, and the nod to her past wasn’t lost on fans.
Then, in January 2022, amid the drama going on between her and sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, she once again wore the outfit to share with fans on Instagram. This time, she had a choker necklace on. In her caption, she wrote, “Pssss this is my new …Baby One More Time outfit ????????????♀️ !!!!”
Seeing how she has posted this look several times through the years, it’s not difficult at all to say that it is definitely part of her wardrobe staple.
The Impact
Spears’ fans – or even those who just casually listen to her – have all been very supportive of her. The singer showcasing outfits from her past music videos weren’t just a nod to her legacy but also an important reminder of her freedom (and reclamation of her life) from the conservatorship that jailed her for years.
