’90s Sitcom ‘Frasier’ Is Getting A Reboot! Here Are All The Deets

Nearly two decades after the beloved and celebrated ’90s sitcom Frasier ended, we’re finally getting a reboot!

Paramount+ is pulling old series from the shelf, and they picked a winner with this one. If you didn’t know it yet, in its 11-season run on NBC from 1993 until 2004, it earned 107 Primetime Emmy Award nominations with 37 wins. And to put a sentimental touch, Kelsey Grammer, who played the iconic psychiatrist protagonist, will be reprising his role.

Here are all the details we know for all the fans calling for a return.

The Plot: What will be different?

The original series follows the life of a successful Boston psychiatrist named Dr. Frasier Crane. Frasier moves from Boston back to Seattle, his hometown, after his policeman father, Martin (John Mahoney), suffers a shot in the hip while on duty.

Restarting his life, he hosts his own radio talk show, sharing wit and wisdom with his listeners. However, there are times that he struggles not only with his father but also with his pretentious brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce), friends, and co-workers.

Frasier enters the next chapter of his life for the reboot as he returns to Boston. According to Grammer, who also serves as the show’s executive producer, the doctor will face new challenges and meet new people in the city. He will also finally fulfill an old dream – or maybe two of them.

Of course, they will most certainly honor the past. Right off the bat, they named the first episode “The Good Father,” a callback to the original pilot titled “The Good Son.” Additionally, they will also be honoring the late John Mahoney. There will be nods to him throughout the show, and they’ll revisit their dynamic through Frasier and his son, Freddy.

The Cast

Will the original actors reprise their roles?

Kelsey Grammer will be returning as Dr. Frasier Crane, and his decision to do so has been the key that unlocked a reboot. He’s the only original cast member to reprise his role. However, Bebe Neuwirth, who played Lilith, Frasier’s ex-wife, and Peri Gilpin, who portrayed longtime producer Roz Doyle, will be doing guest appearances.

Hyde Pierce’s Niles, who fans were also excited to see again, unfortunately, won’t be appearing in the show as the actor decided he wasn’t interested in repeating his performance. Additionally, he believed that the new storyline didn’t need his character.

“I believe it can be done without me, too – finding new stories to tell, in the same way that Frasier did after ‘Cheers.’ They didn’t bring along the ‘Cheers‘ gang to make a new show.”

Jane Leeves, who took on the role of Niles’ wife, Daphne Moon, was on the fence and ultimately couldn’t make it happen.

Who will be joining Kelsey Grammer for the reboot?

First on the list is Jack Cutmore-Scott, who would be playing grown-up Freddy. His dynamic with his father, Frasier, will definitely be one of the focuses of the reboot. His hunky good looks are a bonus.

Then, there’s Jess Salguerio as Eve, Freddy’s college roommate. She’s a spontaneous and outgoing creative who would serve as a critical bridge between Frasier and Freddy. Salguerio’s acting credits include Letterkenny, The Boys, The Expanse, Workin’ Moms, and Y: The Last Man.

Anders Keith stars as David, Frasier’s nephew and the son of Daphne and Niles. His character is awkward, quirky, and enthusiastic, earning him his uncle’s fondness. It is the actor’s debut TV role after graduating last May 2022 from Julliard.

Of course, Frasier wouldn’t be Frasier without his colleagues. Nicholas Lyndhurst will be playing the role of a college professor named Alan. He and Frasier used to be college buddies.

As for the actors, they also once worked together in the London production of The Man From La Mancha. There’s Olivia, who will be played by Toks Olagundoye. She’s Alan’s colleague and the head of the university’s psychology department.

The reboot, written by Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli and executive-produced by Tom Russo, Jordan McMahon, and Kelsey Grammer, will stream exclusively on Paramount+. It was set for ten episodes, and the first two will premiere on October 12, 2023. If you’re not subscribed, you can still watch the premiere’s special airing on CBS on October 17 at 9:15 PM ET/PT.
