Sound the fire alarm – Chicago Fire’s Stella Kidd and Kelly Severide’s relationship is amping up the heat at Firehouse 51 season after season. The two recorded off-the-charts chemistry from the moment they met in Season 4.
WARNING! Their storyline is one hell of a rollercoaster ride, and there are more times (than you’d want to) that they will send you right to the edge of your seat. They have a lot to unpack and face from their past and work complications to come to terms with. Oh, and they can also be incredibly stubborn at times.
Revisit with us every defining moment of their love story.
Stella Kidd Joins Firehouse 51
Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) had a long-held reputation for being the ladies’ man. The rough and tough firefighter had been caught in whirlwind romances, and he even got married in Las Vegas in Season 3 shortly – 24 hours, to be exact – after he got to know her.
Then came Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo).
Kidd joined Firehouse 51 on Season 4, Episode 15, and it was clear that she and Severide had a past. Three episodes later, that past was explained.
Apparently, Severide snuck onto Kidd’s roof and did the whole nine yards to romanticize her – singing Frank Sinatra’s “This Love Of Mine” while rappelling down. He was also biting a rose in his mouth. What he didn’t know was that Kidd was married at the time.
No charges were pressed against him that night, thanks to Kidd. But that definitely did make their reunion awkward.
Off-The-Charts Chemistry Recorded
Kidd definitely shook up Severide’s life when she joined Firehouse 51 Engine 18. The romantic tension between them had been building until it exploded in Season 14, Episode 21, with a passionate kiss in the backroom of Molly’s bar after Severide helped her with the malfunctioning fancy ice maker.

It was just a brief moment, but anyone who saw that scene felt their off-the-charts chemistry. After that, they picked up two episodes later and finished off with a heated, intimate session at Kidd’s apartment.
Breaking Point
Sadly, their romance fizzled out before it started after Kidd’s ex, Grant (Guy Burnet), appeared.
Grant started stalking Kidd, and he was actually lurking inside her apartment when she and Severide were having sex. Then, in Season 5, it escalated to him waiting for her outside Molly’s bar to attack. Luckily, Severide was there to step in, stabbing Grant to protect Kidd.
Grant suffered major injuries that night and had to be rushed to the hospital. Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately), he survived, and Kidd convinced him to commit himself to rehab.
Here was the part where things took a 180 for the two: Kidd chose not to press attempted murder charges against her ex-husband. That decision became their breaking point.
They remained good friends, though, and Kidd would even crash at Severide’s place. They were basically roommates at that point.
Realization Hits
For the first half of the sixth season, the two hooked up with other people. Then, the realization that they were really developing feelings for each other finally hit them in Episode 15.
Kidd asked Severide what was going on with him, saying, “Can you just, for once, just tell me what you’re feeling?” In response, he leaned in to kiss her, and they were FINALLY “officially dating.”
Shortly after, their relationship was tested. Classic. In the later episode, Kidd met Severide’s mom, who wasn’t exactly welcoming of her, so they lived separately, with Kidd moving out to Herrmann’s attic apartment to push their relationship forward. Then, in perfect timing, Severide’s ex Renee (Sarah Shahi) comes back to town and into the picture.
Nevertheless, the new couple remained strong. “Wherever you are is where I want to be,” Severide told Kidd.
Push And Pull
After the death of Severide’s father, Benny (Treat Williams), in Season 7, he decided to cut everyone off in his life – including his girlfriend. Then again, in perfect timing, Kidd’s childhood friend Tyler (Tye White) arrived in town and confessed his feelings for her.
Later, Kidd finally confronted him about why he pushed her away and finally broke up with him. However, before the season ended, they rekindled their romance.

Then came their work complications, pushing and pulling their relationship.
Toward Season 9, Severide learned that some of their colleagues thought Kidd’s rise in the ranks was due to her relationship with him. So, to make it clear that it wasn’t, he decided to keep his distance from Kidd.
However, that didn’t work out as he planned. It sent Kidd the wrong message: either he was no longer interested in her or didn’t believe she had what it takes to be a lieutenant. Fortunately, they talked things out and didn’t break up.
The Proposal
The two took their relationship to the next level while standing in a burning building. Yes, they did THAT. As the story continued, Kidd returned to rescue Severide in a house fire when he knelt and proposed to her. To which she said yes without hesitation.
Getting engaged didn’t mean they’d be set for a happily ever after. Kidd went radio silent during Season 10 as she traveled states for her Girls on Fire program. When she came back, tensions were high between them.
Then, she confessed that she messed up, and it was because she had been so anxious about her career. However, it was never because she didn’t want to be with Severide.
Then, in Season 10, Severide proposed to Kidd again, but this time, he had a ring.
Saying “I Do”
Before Kidd and Severide said their “I Dos” in the finale of Season 10, they had to battle through many things.
For one, the two got into a fight about the wedding plans, which wasn’t too uncommon for engaged couples. Second, Severide ended up in a hospital after being beaten by a group of men associated with a drug ring. After that, they decided to move up their wedding, which was supposed to be in four months, to the next week.
“The only way to learn how to run into a real fire is by doing it,” Severide said.

Then, on their wedding day itself, they ran into more trouble. Severide was attacked at knifepoint, and then when they arrived at the venue, the ceremony had to be moved to a nearby boat because of double booking. However, everything ended on a romantic note, with Kidd and Severide exchanging beautiful messages for each other before finally tying the knot.
Happily Ever After – Or Not
Becoming husband and wife was only the start of a lifetime together, which meant they were in for many more challenges.
First, just right on their honeymoon, they were attacked again by two gunmen who were both linked to the same drug gang that Severide was going to testify against. While running, Kidd lured one of them, who was going straight for her husband. She almost died during the encounter. Luckily, Severide got the gunman in time before he fired.
Then, in Season 11, Kidd was again put into a dangerous situation. This time, instead of guns, there was a bomb. Fortunately, Kidd didn’t suffer major injuries from the blast.
Then, later in the season, Severide went against Kidd’s call about a case that potentially involved a bomb. While no one got hurt, this had brought tension between them, especially since his wife had previously experienced a bomb scare.
They talked it out afterward, and Severide apologized to his wife.
What’s next?
It would be an understatement to say that Stella Kidd and Kelly Severide had gotten through A LOT in their relationship. Nevertheless, through these challenges, they had grown better not just as husband and wife but as teammates as well. We’re sure they will only get better (and probably more dramatic, too) from here on out.
